I've been thinking that all I need for a laptop at work isĀ

1. terminal + ssh (including ssh agents, etc)

2. web browser

3. RDP client (for now)

I have been playing with a Chromebook for a while, and it looks like it will do pretty much all of this. My complaint is that I have to use some workarounds in order to get some things done, but then, I use some workarounds to get work done with my current MacBook Pro. Perhaps getting proxies to work properly would fix most of my complaints... and remove the need for RDP.

You might pick one that folks have happily run galliumos on. That's an ubuntu Linux flavor tailored for Chromebooks. Best to ask for actual experiences rather than trusting the compatibility table, in my experience. This way you can do more if you find chromeos limiting.
